Dear Redsides Members,

Reminder: our first meeting of the fall is tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 9th at 6:00 p.m. at the PublicHouse in Springfield.

We’ll be joined by Dassy Kinney, Education Project Coordinator at Middle Fork Watershed Council, who will tell us all about the Salmon Watch program and how to volunteer.

Additionally, to help us all get caught up on our summer fishing adventures, we’ll have a roundtable for everyone who likes to share tales from the field - be it fly fishing, hiking, camping, boating, music, whatever!

Speak Up for the Roadless Rule

The 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule prohibits new road construction and industrial logging on 58.5 million acres of multiple-use public lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service across 39 states. These un-roaded portions of our National Forests provide some of the best fish and wildlife habitat and hunting and angling opportunities for Americans of all walks of life.

On August 18, 2026, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a proposed rule that would eliminate widely supported protections on more than 45 million acres of roadless public land throughout the country.

Your voice matters! The public comment period on the proposal to rescind the roadless rule is open now through September 21.

Restoring Water and Habitat in the Klamath Headwaters

For the last five years, much of TU’s restoration work in the Klamath headwaters has centered on the Sprague River watershed, one of the primary headwater tributaries to Upper Klamath Lake. The work is ongoing, but to date the ambitious effort has spanned over 34 miles of stream habitat, most of which has been on private agricultural and timber lands. One project took place within the Fremont-Winema National Forest.

Fed by spring water and snowmelt, the Sprague River is a popular destination for anglers targeting native redband trout. It provides critical habitat for remaining populations of threatened bull trout and, historically, was important spawning and rearing habitat for salmon and steelhead.
